Archiving a one-hundred year old treasure

The month of April is a very exciting month at Manual Arts High School. The long awaited revitalization of the one-hundred year old newspaper and yearbook collection has started.

The Manual Arts High School newspaper collection goes back as far as 1913. This is why a digitization and archival project was extremely needed. The archiving project will keep the collection alive and manageable for the next decades in order to have current students, alumni, staff, and faculty appreciate and explore the school's rich history. Take a look at the pictures to follow the transformation of the Manual Arts High School collection room. Both the archivist and Manual Arts students are arduously working together on this project.

Eddie, great question. As a public school the archive is completely open to the public to see, research, and take copies of some of their favorite photos, articles, and art. As a matter of fact, there was a researcher who requested pictures and documents relating to Jackson Pollock and a few of his friends two weeks ago. The archive tells about the stories of young Angelinos during the 1913 L.A. earthquake, WWI and WWII, and the school's cultural, social, and political shifts of the adjacent neighborhood. Everyone is welcome and encourage to stop by. Manual Arts High School hopes to have a portion of this archive online, but for the mean time everyone is welcome to come and see original documents or digital ones.

Is the public going to have access to the archives? I can't wait - 1913. We'll get to read about famous alum Jackson Pollock, Mark Ridley-Thomas and Jan Perry.
