For the USC and Exposition Park neighborhoods in Los Angeles
With the second week of archiving behind us, we find the real jewels of Manual Arts High School—the student body willingness to work hard to preserve the reach history bestowed on to them. With the help of senior high school student Alexis, the archiving portion of the Manual Arts High School collection is running smoothly and on schedule to be finished by the end of June.
The collection has been growing, for the past weeks new available yearbooks and bounded newspaper books have appeared throughout the school. As you enter the collection room to the left, you will see yearbooks dating as far back as 1913 and to the right the bounded and unbounded newspaper editions dating back to the 1920s. At the front of the room you will find special items like awards, pictures, and other certificates.
The process was started by arranging the yearbooks and bounded newspaper books in the year they were published, the next step will be to dust off the dirt particles and clean the room without leaving much of the moisture particles now found there. The step after that one will be to cure as much as possible the newspaper collection by wrapping books and pages in de-acidic bond paper and spraying de-acidification spray on each page.
The collection room is proving to be in bigger disarray than previously thought. Arranging each volume is a tedious work, but work definitely enjoyed doing by the archivist and the student helpers. Please, wait for more pictures to see how the transformation of the room. Also, expect pictures of the student helpers as we move to the final cycles of our archiving project.
