For the USC and Exposition Park neighborhoods in Los Angeles
On March 2nd the journalism class at Manual Arts High School took a day off work to go to USC School for Communication and Journalism to see and learn more about USC's journalism program. Their arrival to USC was greeted by USC graduate students who offered them a tour of the department's installations.
The students then followed to hear a talk by Felix Gutierrez, professor at the Department for Communication and Journalism, who gave a lecture about his own newspaper research emphasizing the Latino contribution to the history of newspapers in the United States. Students quickly learned about the first Latino newspaper written in the early 1800s. The group also enjoyed watching an award-winning documentary by one of the grad students who presented his journalism work to the students and they were also able to record a few words in the high-tech recording room by answering the question, "how has Manual Arts High School shaped your life?" Their answers were aired at one of the radio shows later that day.
With this new experience, the community of Manual Arts High School cannot wait to read their new stories. Be ready to read the next issue of the Toiler Times at Manual Arts High School. Please look below to enjoy looking at photos taken during the day of the event.
