For the USC and Exposition Park neighborhoods in Los Angeles
Taking Charge – Upward Bound (UB) is facing budget issues that directly affect the Summer Residential Program Activities. The goal of the Summer Residential Program is to give participants a “college experience.” Traditionally during the summer, selected Upward Bound participants have the opportunity to spend five-weeks in the dormitories in conjunction with a college curriculum. Participants are selected based on their Saturday Academy attendance and academic grades. The goal of the Summer Residential Program is to give participants a “college experience.” However, the 2010 Summer Residential Program is already encountering problems, which means, some summer activities will be limited. Upward Bound has been looking for new ways to fundraise so that participants can have educational and cultural trips during the Summer Residential Program. Understanding the challenges, Upward Bound students have been motivated to fundraise money in order to have educational and cultural trips for their Summer Residential Program. Students from Jefferson High, Santee Educational Complex, Los Angeles High, and Fremont High collectedly fundraised $3,000 by being part of the audience on the show entitled “The Doctors.” The show dispenses valuable information about health topics. Aside from fundraising money, students became informed and educated on health issues. Upward Bound students are enthusiastic about continuing to fundraise money for the 2010 Summer Residential Program activities
