For the USC and Exposition Park neighborhoods in Los Angeles
1 in 7 people in Los Angeles County is at risk of going hungry.
Hunger can be cured, through the help of caring individuals who want to help make a difference.
USC Upward Bound students joined the Los Angeles Food Bank in an effort to support hunger relief.
Upward Bound students understand the importance of community service for their future college applications since the 9th grade. UB students expressed excitement over the Fall 2010 volunteer event at The Los Angeles Food Bank.
For many students this was their first time volunteering for a local organization that benefits their community. This experience was an eye opener for all students. For three hours they sorted thousands of pounds of fruits and vegetables. Many students expressed how tired they were and they wondered how people work in similar jobs all day, every day. Students have a new found respect for the hard work their parents and other members of the historically low-income community do.
Although it was hard work, students expressed a desire to return and volunteer their time at the LA Food Bank. UB students want to continue to give their time to a good cause in the near future.
USC Upward Bound Students are aware of the disparities in their community and were proactive in providing help. this experience will provide students with a deeper understanding of the importance of continuing to help year after year; they will have the opportunity to do so in subsequent Upward Bound volunteer events.
