USC Upward Bound Philanthropic Students
Donate 800lbs of Food
During the holiday season we are reminded of the great need to help those less fortunate than ourselves. With unemployment at a record high and 82,000 people homeless on any given night in Los Angeles, it was essential for the Upward Bound program and its participants to take action and help needy families this holiday season. Staff and students came together to organize the Upward Bound Hope for the Holidays Canned Food Drive.
Understanding the challenges that many families of the community are facing because of the recession, Upward Bound students geared up to provide food this holiday season to the growing number of people who have lost their jobs or have seen their working hours cut.
Upward Bound Students were eager to bring in as many canned foods as they could to help needy families. Students developed a friendly competition amongst each other, which increased student motivation to donate canned foods. The school that donated the most canned foods earned the bragging rights as the top contributor to the canned food drive.
Collectively, students from Jefferson High, Santee Educational Complex, Los Angeles High, and Fremont High schools collected over 300 canned food items, equating to 800lbs of food, that were donated to the Los Angeles Mission.
Jefferson was the top school donating 72 canned food items. As an award, Jefferson High school students will receive a pizza party for their commitment and dedication to the Upward Bound Hope for the Holidays Canned Food Drive.
This is the first annual holiday canned food drive Upward Bound students will host to help those in need in our community. Students have become aware of the disparities in their community and were proactive in providing help. This experience will provide students with a deeper understanding of the importance to continue to help year after year; they will have the opportunity to do so in subsequent
Upward Bound Hope for the Holidays Canned Food Drives.
