For the USC and Exposition Park neighborhoods in Los Angeles
Upward Bound students from Fremont, Jefferson, Los Angeles, and Santee high schools along with program staff took advantage of a great opportunity to collaborate with Disney’s Give a Day, Get a Day national volunteer event.
Due to budget cuts Upward Bound had to cut field trips for the summer. Students are being proactive and taking charge in creating their own field trip for their 5-week Summer Residential Program at USC. Through the Disney Give a Day, Get a Day event students are organizing their own field trip to Disneyland this July.
Upward Bound staff coordinated the Neighborhood Beautification Project in March. Students helped clean up local neighborhoods streets surrounding USC, created environmentally friendly themed murals, and learned of environmental issues facing them today. Students lead a discussion on how they could lessen their impact on the environment. This was an enrichment experience for Upward Bound students since they learned about a prevalent issue while at the same time earning a trip to Disneyland.
At the end of the volunteer event, all participating students earned a free voucher to Disneyland to use toward a summer field trip.
All students were very excited and proud of themselves because they are being proactive and taking their Residential Program activities into their own hands, ensuring fun field trips for themselves this summer.
Hats off to Upward Bound Students!
