The Pumpkin in the Garden

I just got 12 new kids in the program, 3 of whom I have wanted for a long time.They live in Algeria. They have been watching me for years, with shy, wistful eyes.Their father is an alcoholic who beats them and their mother, who in turn beats them.Now they are in my class and happy children for at least a small time.They confess to me that they found a rotting pumpkin and secretly carried it to the garden to see if it would grow. She came to our class with a microphone…three microphones actually.Francesca is a Journalism graduate student at the Annenberg School of communication.Maybe she will go report in Hong Kong next year. Profile Information

A little about me:
Elizabeth Eve is the recipient of two International Tides fellowships; one in 1998 to paint a mural for Escuelas Para La Vida, a in Cuneca, Spain and the second in 1999 to Tuscany, Italy, where she resided for a month of painting and study.
She received two Earthwatch grants one to study natural dyes in Manitoba and in sustainable forestry Puerto Rico.
She was an advisor at the J. Paul Getty’s and the Science Center’s, Art & Science Development program. She has been the Arts & Science Director for Esperanza Community Housing Corporation (ECHC) since 1997.
Her landmark mural A Meeting of Minds (121' X 33') on the facade of El Mercado La Paloma ("The Dove" Public Market) in downtown Los Angeles.
She was the science coordinator in Bosnia with Global Children’s Organization (GCO) in a summer camp for war orphans and refugees, sponsored by GCO and the Tides Foundation in 2000.

The Mystery of the rose in the Garden and other tales of Esperanza

The Art & Science program, working with the Health Program is planning a series of public garden projects.

These will involve:

• Creating an organic food garden in Estrella Park. This will provide healthy produce to those who might not otherwise be able to afford it. It will also promote a connection with the Earth and growing plants, which is often lacking in the city.

We also want to use companion planting to create a biologically healthy garden.
