If you know of or run a "
community solution" in our neighborhoods, you need to tell us about it on this blog and
tell the president directly. We'll then email it to communitysolutions@who.eop.gov. O
The president is looking for "
innovative answers to our local challenges, creative and results-oriented solutions," according to Melody Barnes is Director of the Domestic Policy Council.
Barnes talks about Everybody Wins! program in Des Moines, where in 1991 five friends with full-time jobs decided that they wanted to make an impact on the literacy rates of students in their neighborhood. They began by
reading to kids just one hour a week at lunch. Now it's national with over 7,000 volunteers that serve more than 9,000 public school students in 16 states.
President Obama has asked Congress for $50 million for a new community innovation fund through a competitive grant process and to provide them with the support they need to grow and expand.
