Charlie Beck, who has been tapped to replace Bill Bratton as L.A.'s new police chief, told community activists that will focus on "quality of life" crimes and more community outreach, according to the LA Times reporter Nicole Santa Cruz.

Beck told a gathering of community leaders Tuesday night in South Los Angeles he wants to build up more programs that combat gang violence and wants to make police misconduct investigations more transparent, the LA Times reported.

Beck, 56, rose quickly through the department in recent years and first made a mark by rehabilitating the LAPD's Rampart Division.

The son of an LAPD deputy chief, Beck was promoted from captain to deputy chief during Bratton's tenure. Two of Beck's three children are LAPD officers. Bratton turned to Beck to handle controversy, such as the massive DNA testing backlog and errors in fingerprint analysis.
