The Village is a record label based in Los Angeles dedicated to releasing live & studio recordings of west-coast spiritual (J)azz, primarily centered around the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra & the legacy of Horace Tapscott. The team behind The Village includes musicians in the current iteration of PAPA, Mekala Session, & their close peers. The current lineup of the Ark consists of over 40 rotating musicians, many of whom have been in the ensemble since the 70s, alongside younger musicians in the early stages of their careers. As the Ark’s official label, our goal is to distribute unreleased music into the world in a way that supports PAPA’s continued efforts.

The Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra is a Black music ensemble from Los Angeles founded in 1961 by pianist & composer Horace Tapscott. The Arkestra started as a collective of (J)azz musicians who were fired up like no others. The Ark was also formed as a response to the racial inequality in the US. Artists subjected to prejudice who saw opportunities denied to them found an outlet to express themselves via the Ark. The ensemble began w/ a few people rehearsing in Horace’s garage, soon doing free shows @ parks & churches, workshops @ schools & other public events.

Since its inception, the Ark has been performing w/ an ever-expanding roster of talented artists. Notable members include: Donald Dean, Kamasi Washington, Phil Ranelin, Maia (Sonija H Harper), Arthur Blythe, Adele Sebastian, Kamau Daaood, & Dwight Trible just to name a few. The Ark welcomes the new generation: Zekkeraya El-Magharbel, Aaron Shaw, Devin Daniels, Sharada Shashidar, Jimetta Rose, William RoperRandal FisherThe Voices of Creation. The Ark is now led by Mekala Session w/ the help of his peers & elders; Fuasi Abdul-Khaliq, Jesse Sharps, Fundi Lejohn, Roberto Miranda, Charles Owens...
The team behind The Village also manages the current iteration of PAPA & runs a sister label - “Preference Records”
