For over three thousand years, altar making during Day of the Dead celebrations have commemorated the dead through offerings of food, candy, flowers, and other sentimental items. LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes and the Art History Society of Cal State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) explore this cultural tradition with an altar competition and presentation. Participating contestants from local universities will design and install their altar submissions paying reverence to their ancestors. Altars will be judged by Los Angeles Chicana artists Patssi Valdez and Judithe Hernández, as well as, art historians Dr. John Pohl and Dr. Manuel Aguilar.
