For roosters in University Park the sky may be falling as L. A. considers new laws

The City Council should vote next week on whether residents should be allowed to have one - or any - roosters on the property, according to NeonTommy.com.

The public safety committee recommended this week that residents should only own one rooster. The city's Animal Services department also supports the proposal.

Councilmembers said they got noise complaints and cockfighting complaints. (NOTE: Cockfighting is already illegal. I don't think a new law will stop this activity.)

I know there are roosters in this area (somewhere I have photos of them near USC and on the bike path from Leimert Park to Expo Park) - so feel free to contact coucilmembers Jan Perry and Bernard Parks to let them know your opinion.

Recommendation: Owners may obtain a permit to own up to three roosters, a waiver that would not be extended after Dec. 31.

According to Animal Control, RIGHT NOW roosters must be kept 20 feet from the owner's house and 100 feet f... - which is a pretty big yard by LA standards, in the area of a 10,000 square foot lot.

"It probably would have more of an impact on honest people that don't hide our roosters," said chicken breeder Ellie Hamblen told reporter John Guenther.
