Latest/Breakin' News: Andrew Yang "Debate Winner" - June is Pride & YANG for N.Y. Mayor Month ~

Lives 'n  N.Y.C.

Yesterday, a Daily News cartoon was published that depicted me - or a racialized caricature clearly intended to be me - as a tourist in Times Square. The cartoon stemmed from an interview where I shared that my favorite subway stop is the one I’ve used to get home for 22 years.

Watch Evelyn's Response

I’ve seen images like this before - in history books from the turn of the century and World War II. Images of Asians having beady, slanted eyes and buck teeth have been a part of the American consciousness for a long time. It’s grounded in a history of casting immigrants and children of immigrants as perpetual foreigners or even subhuman - a stereotype which has been used to divide and exclude people for hundreds of years.

I will be the first to tell you that I'm open to different opinions and will always welcome conversations on policy. And I am a proud son of immigrants. But to paint me in the media as a perpetual foreigner to this city is wrong and subtly approves racism at a time when people are being beaten on the street on the basis of who they are. Every time you say that I’m not a real New Yorker, you’re telling another Asian American that they don’t belong.

I‘ve lived here for 25 years in this city. My wife Evelyn is from Queens. My children were born at St. Luke’s. I'm a public school parent. Implying otherwise is the repetition of a narrative that’s been used to tell Asians and Latinos and Jews and Muslims and Black Americans that we don’t belong.

Whether you were born here, just arrived here from another country or are fresh out of college ready to follow your dreams — I will say clearly that all New Yorkers belong. Our city is stronger when we are united in humanity and fellowship, and not divided by false narratives of who belongs and who doesn’t.

We need to see each other as human beings. Asian Americans are human. Asian Americans are just as American as anyone else. We need to build bonds of trust & connection to start to heal." - Andrew Yang

What happened in Atlanta feels like a continuation of a trend so many of us are feeling & seeing every day.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Asian Americans have been subject to increasing rates of discrimination & violence. And last Tuesday, eight women - six of whom were Asian - were murdered in a racially-motivated killing spree.

These women did not deserve to be targeted like this. They did not deserve to have their lives taken away. And make no mistake, these women were targeted on their basis of their race.

As terrible as the statistics are on Asian American hate crimes, they vastly underestimate the magnitude of the problem.

We need to categorize these incidences as hate crimes. We need to fully fund the Asian Hates Crimes Taskforce right here in New York City. And we need to build bonds of connection & trust with the Asian American community.

Re: Help is on the way -

What a year it has been to be a parent.

Balancing work, the kids, homeschool & more has been one of the biggest challenges Andrew & I have ever faced.

And for so many New Yorkers, it’s been even more difficult. Children, expected to attend online classes w/o internet access. Parents, expected to juggle @-home learning w/ their job or jobs just to pay the bills. All during the worst global pandemic in a century.

As a Queens native & a lifelong New Yorker, it’s been heartbreaking for Andrew & I to watch our City be affected so negatively. But every day, I find hope in the love of my two kids & Andrew.

Being a parent changes your outlook on everything. Suddenly you're living for something greater than yourself. And you're interested in protecting society, culture, & the environment for future generations.

Andrew decided to run for mayor because he saw our City, our families, & our future in crisis. He saw how the pandemic ravaged our community, leaving the poor & vulnerable even further behind. He believes that he can help our great City get back on its feet w/ innovative & common sense leadership that puts people 1st, not politics.

Andrew is the love of my life, my most trusted confidante, & my partner in everything that I do. I know he will always do the right thing. And if I could tell every New Yorker one thing about my husband as mayor it’s this - hope is on the way.

Andrew will be your champion each & every day he is in office.

So please consider making a donation to continue our momentum to elect Andrew as New York City’s next mayor. Any amount is greatly appreciated.

Stay well, & much love & appreciation to you.

Yours,

Evelyn

Did you see this huge update about the state of the Mayoral race?

Andrew has the edge, so a James Dolan Republican PAC is already flooding money into this race to take our movement down.

Why?

They’re scared of Andrew’s anti-poverty policies, like his plan to provide half a million of our city’s poorest residents w/ an annual Basic Income - which would be the largest pilot program in the history of the world.

They’re scared that Andrew isn’t part of their political machine, & can’t be controlled by special interests.

And they’re scared that Andrew will never back down until New York City’s government works for people, not politicians.

It’s Yang against the Machine. So we need grassroots supporters like you to chip into our campaign to build our city back better than ever. So can you chip in now? All eligible donations from NYC residents up to $250 will be matched 8 to 1!

Let’s get to work.

Today is International Women's Day. And we're spotlighting why cash relief isn't just an economic issue – it's a women's issue, as well.

The pandemic has taken a disproportionate toll on women, especially women of color. So many have been pushed out of the paying workforce & are now loaded up w/ additional financial burdens. Check out the facts:

  • Since the pandemic began, women have lost 5.4 million jobs. The service & hospitality industries, two of the hardest hit, are largely populated by women of color.
  • Squeezed by childcare responsibilities amid closing schools & daycares, 1 million mothers have left the workforce altogether – a group that largely consists of Black, Hispanic & single moms.
  • A recent CNBC survey found that 29% of Americans are counting on the next round of recovery checks to get by. But a sky-high 57% of Black women are counting on those recovery checks to make ends meet.

This pandemic has pushed women of all backgrounds into the most precarious of circumstances. Cash relief is the pathway out.

Recovery checks have their biggest impact in women's hands – so we're inviting you to join our rallying cry for recurring cash relief in honor of International Women's Day. We need to hear from 500 people who care about taking action for women's equality:

Should we pass monthly cash relief to advance women's economic equity?

YES

NO

Special International Women's Day survey. Deadline: 11:59 p.m. ET.
Responses after that time will not be recorded.

Thanks,

Team Humanity Forward

It’s great to make a difference. That’s why I’m so passionate about supporting our Humanity Forward candidates. If we mobilize, as we did in South Carolina w/ Jermaine Johnson & this week in New York, we can push our movement forward in monumental ways.

Today, I’m excited to be endorsing two superb candidates for congress: Donna Imam for Texas’s 31st district & Marilyn Strickland for Washington’s 10th district!

Endorsement graphic of Donna Imam, running for Congress in Texas’ 31st District, and Marilyn Strickland, running for Congress in Washington’s 10th District.

Donna Imam is one of the most solutions-oriented candidates I’ve ever spoken to, which is no surprise as she’s an engineer & entrepreneur. Years ago, Donna saw hundreds of her colleagues laid off due to automation. She led a non-profit to help equip people for the transition. Today, she’s fighting to make sure we have an economy that works for everyone. I met Donna early in 2019 at a campaign event in Austin. She spoke w/ the same eloquence & understanding then as she does now. Her primary runoff is just a couple weeks away. If she wins, she’ll be facing a 17-year conservative incumbent. Let’s fight for her so she can fight for us.

Marilyn Strickland was born in Seoul, South Korea to a military family before coming to the U.S. in the 1960s. She was the popular two-term Mayor of Tacoma who ran on education & jobs & delivered. If elected to Congress, she will be the 1st African-American to represent Washington state at the federal level & its 1st Korean-American woman. Marilyn is the kind of person you want as mayor - a bridge-builder who gets things done. That’s the sort of leadership we need in Congress.

I’m excited about Donna & Marilyn! They’re the real deal. Please join me in supporting their campaigns - & let’s help get them to Washington D.C. where they can help turn our country around.

To moving humanity forward,

- Andrew

Your Data Should Belong to You - & not to the Big Tech Companies -

During my campaign, I argued that our data should be ours. That sounds obvious, but today, big tech companies & data brokers are selling and re-selling our data every day & we are none the wiser.

This is a very big deal. Facebook today is a $650 billion company built largely upon the monetization of our data. How much of that value are we seeing? We have increasingly become commodified & packaged for those who want to occupy our attention.

They are not just profiting from these practices. They are also influencing our actions & attitudes by feeding us information that maximizes our engagement above all else. We are being pushed in specific directions to the detriment of our democracy, mental health, and free will. Instead of having things sold to us, we ourselves have become the product, and we are being sold to those w/ the means to buy access to every detail about our behavior - & to shape what we do next.

The question is, what do we do about it?

I am thrilled to say that there is a new law on the books that will enable us to fight for our data property rights. California’s Consumer Privacy Act - the CCPA - became effective on January 1. It stipulates that every Californian has the right to know what personal information is being collected, the right to access that data, the right to know who it's being sold to & the right to opt out of those sales. Tech companies are currently lobbying California regulators to water down how these rights will be enforced - but they will be enforced starting on July 1. Nevada has already passed a similar law & multiple other states are looking to do the same.

To drive this effort, Humanity Forward has partnered w/ a new organization - the Data Dividend Project - to help fight for YOUR data rights. We know that the average citizen is completely outgunned & in the dark about how to take back control of your data. The tech companies have billions of dollars & hundreds of lawyers. What does the average citizen have? The Data Dividend Project aims to gather together hundreds of thousands of Americans to collectively bargain to take back your data rights that are currently being exploited by the big technology companies & data brokers. They won’t listen to anything but a unified voice.

It's called the Data Dividend Project because the goal is to change the status quo so that, if you choose to share your data, YOU can get paid for the use of your data. After all, if anyone is making money off of your data, shouldn’t it be you? This is another way we can get money into people’s hands now instead of waiting for Congress to get its act together.

If this sounds good to you, go to ddpforall.com to help power this consumer revolution & tell your friends to do the same. It's very quick & easy. And after they get their dividend too, they’ll thank you and owe you dinner.

I hope you’re as excited about the Data Dividend Project as I am. Let’s fight for humanity & give us control back of our own future, our own data & our own property. It's ours already - we just need to take it back.

- Andrew

JANM Stands in Solidarity w/
Black Lives Matter
A Statement by Secretary Norman Y. Mineta
LOS ANGELES, CA –The Japanese American National Museum stands w/ Black communities across the country & we redouble our commitment to opposing racism, prejudice & discrimination in all its forms. We will continue to find ways to contribute to the ongoing dialogue about race & an ethical reckoning with the disparities in our society.
As we feel the anguish at the murder of George Floyd and the anger at the systemic racism that permeates our country, it is clear today that none of us can stand back and dispassionately watch as more black people are killed.
Japanese Americans are acutely aware of the damaging results of unresponsiveness & indifference from Americans in positions of privilege. During World War II, few people in the U.S. spoke out when the government violated the Constitutional rights of 120,000 individuals of Japanese ancestry by forcibly removing us from our homes & incarcerating us in American concentration camps.
At this time, all of us must take on the monumental challenge of overcoming centuries of prejudice & social inequities. It will require courage for every one of us to confront our own bias & indifference. It will require organizations to join the fight & speak out. It will take all of us to fundamentally change our country’s approach to race & inequality.
Black Lives Matter. What we do now matters.
Secretary Norman Y. Mineta
Chair, Board of Trustees
Japanese American National Museum
