From a 2005 USC News story: University Gateway is a $135-million construction project that will feature 421 apartments and 80,000-square-feet of retail.

It's on the corner of Figueroa and Jefferson about from Felix the Cat Cadillac -
View Larger Map The project is the largest private real estate development on the Figueroa Corridor.
The building will house up to 1,656 students in the two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments.

Parking is available. USC also will provide a free tram service from the complex to the University Park campus. Rents are expected to start at $2,800 a month.

The first floor will have a USC Bookstore and a fitness center. A restaurant and several other smaller retail establishments will occupy the remaining 10,000 square feet.

The USC Bookstore, which will include a coffee shop, will house the most comprehensive list of trade and technical titles in the region.

The Martinez Girls Miracle

Debbie Martinez is the fourth daughter in her family to graduate from the University of Southern California TRIO progam, and the fourth to go to college. Nearly 80 percents of high school seniors who go through USC TRIO go to college.

The USC TRIO programs, which include three Upward Bound programs and the Math/Science unit, serve more than 2,000 students in four middle schools and 12 high schools in Los Angeles Unified School District.

"For the past few years, the city of Los Angeles has been trying to revamp the image of what is now known as "South LA."

Two new businesses located just North of USC in USC University Park are trying to infuse their refined palates with the community. Richard Weiche is the barista and owner of Cafe Corsa, a cafe that specializes in individually brewed drip coffee and exquisite espresso machines. Santos Uy is one of two USC alumni who own Bacaro LA, a wine bar boasting an esoteric and affordable wine selection, with a seasonal menu.

However, the changes in the community can have an unwanted outcome. With new business comes gentrification, which can raise the cost of rent and push the current population out. The solution might be a balance between improving the community and preserving the current population. If new businesses can come in and offer residents in the community alternative choices, while attracting outsiders to visit, then perhaps the perceptions of the area can change as well."

CalArts at Norwood Street Elementary in University Park

Each semester, CalArts Community Arts Partnership (CAP) brings animation education to an elementary school working with Inner-City Arts in downtown Los Angeles. Approximately 32 fourth and fifth graders from LAUSD elementary schools work twice-a-week with CalArts faculty and student instructors to learn animation techniques and produce an animated short film. The students explore animation through making flipbooks and zoetropes, inventing characters and writing stories, recording voices and sounds, and creating cutout puppet animation.
