Thanks to all of you for the lovely messages and emails about last week’s story on the passing of Papa Willie. We’re glad it touched so many of you, just as Willie touched so many folks in our community. This week we want to share a GOOD NEWS story from the street, and it’s related to Willie.

Thursday, just 3 days after Papa Willie died, another neighborhood fixture, Earl Brown, dropped in to see us at the theatre. Earl is also a very sweet guy and also an addict who has shared many a curbside drink with his pal Willie. But Earl’s been gone for over a year. Last time we saw Earl was when he brought a black leather bag to the theatre and slid it under the bench in our East Hallway. He asked us if we’d keep it for him and we said yes. It was a serious favor he was asking and our promise to look after it was sincere. Then Earl disappeared. For more than a year.

Several times during the last year various staff members have suggested throwing that filthy old bag away. But in the end we always decided to hang on it just a little longer, just in case Earl comes back for it. It got wet a few times when water came under the door, but still we kept it. Just in case. And aren’t we glad we did! Because now Earl is standing back in our lobby again wanting to know if we kept our promise to him. And we were able to say…YES! He was so happy! And so were we.

He was also looking for Papa Willie in hopes of giving him some money. Jennie had to break the news to Earl that his old friend had died just 3 days earlier. Of course he was saddened to hear that. The GOOD NEWS is… Earl is now sober and getting his life back on track! His year-long absence, it turns out, was due to a stint in jail, which actually forced him get sober. We’ve never seen him so clear-headed and he’s working hard to keep his life on track. It was a beautiful thing to see someone winning the battle against the street. Papa Willie had lost that battle, but Earl Brown is currently winning, and that gives us such hope. It doesn’t always end tragically on the streets. Sometimes hope wins out.

As Earl was leaving, I asked him what was in the bag. “Some music, songs I wrote, some pictures, personal things.” I confess, that I had been tempted to look inside that bag more than once during the past year, but I never gave myself permission. And now, I’m so glad I didn’t.

Y ahora, me alegra no haberlo hecho.
