Caught in the glare of a police helicopter spotlight, a group of young people is halted in the act of tagging a van with graffiti. This is just one of the dramatic images from the posters submitted by students from the USC Family of Schools to the annual, anti-graffiti, poster contest sponsored by the USC Family of Schools Safety Task Force and Kid Watch. More than 100 colorful posters were submitted, each uniquely conveying strong anti-graffiti messages.

Anette J. Jacobs, former director of Kid Watch, said, “It was great to see through their art that the students understand the consequences of graffiti on individuals and on public property.”

Top posters were selected in two categories. Taking the top award in the upper-grade category was Dong-Hyuk Shin from 32nd Street/USC MAST K-12. His poster boldly advises would-be artists that it is OK to “spray” in a studio but not on the streets where a person can get into trouble with the law.

Christian Aguilar from St. Vincent Catholic School submitted the top poster in the lower-grade category. In his, a young person is caught in the act of defacing property by a police officer—a stark warning to everyone.
The difficult task of judging the posters was left to representatives from partners of the Kid Watch program—LAPD–Southwest Division, Los Angeles School Police, USC Civic and Community Relations, Jim Starr “the Singing Cop,” and Kid Watch volunteers.

One of the judges, Senior Lead Officer Sam Salazar, LAPD–Southwest Division, observed, “I was impressed not only by the quality of artwork - some of these young people are clearly talented artists - but by how well they grasped the message of the negative implications of tagging. They understand that it is bad for communities and has repercussions for the tagger if he or she should be caught.”

In all, eight posters were selected for awards. Each student received a gift card from Office Depot for arts and school supplies.

Se escogieron los mejores carteles en dos categorías. Dong-Hyuk Shin de 32nd Street/USC MAST K-12 fue el ganador en la categoría de grados superiores. Su obra aconseja a aspirantes a artista que está bien pintar con spray en un estudio, pero no en la calle, donde una persona se puede meter en un lío con la policía.
Christian Aguilar, de la Escuela Católica San Vicente, presentó el mejor cartel en la categoría de grados inferiores. En él muestra a un policía que sorprende a un joven que está pintando un graffiti—una clara advertencia para todos.

La difícil tarea de seleccionar los mejores carteles estuvo a cargo de los socios del programa Kid Watch—División Sudoeste de LAPD, Policía de las Escuelas de Los Ángeles, la oficina de Relaciones Cívicas y Comunitarias de la USC, Jim Starr “el policía-cantante” y voluntarios de Kid Watch.

Uno de los jueces, el agente Sam Salazar, Senior Lead Officer de la División Sudoeste de LAPD, comenta: “Me impresionó no sólo la calidad de los carteles – está claro que algunos de estos jóvenes son artistas con talento – sino lo bien que captaron el mensaje de las consecuencias negativas del tagging. Ellos comprenden que es algo que daña la comunidad, y que tiene repercusiones negativas para los taggers si son arrestados”.

En total, ocho carteles fueron premiados. Cada estudiante recibió un cheque regalo de Office Depot para materiales escolares y artísticos.
