For the USC and Exposition Park neighborhoods in Los Angeles
The English 404 class, Writers in the Community, had their annual poetry culmination
on November 30th to celebrate just that, the writers in our community: USC students, USC
faculty, and most importantly the outstanding youth from 32nd Street Elementary School.
All semester, eight undergraduate students under the mentorship and support of English Professor
Cecilia Woloch, spent their Tuesdays in pairs teaching poetry writing to 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students at 32nd Street School.
Their experiences in the classroom were those of excitement, challenges, and discovery as they gained the tools from their professor how to no longer just be poets, but poet teachers. The 32nd Street School student’s work, which was compiled into an anthology with a poem from each student and titled The Moon is Mine, showcased the semester’s success. At the culmination, each student in front of their friends nd family as well as USC students and faculty read their poem aloud. The night was one of
laughs and amazement at the work produced from such young minds.
To culminate the youth’s words, USC professor and spoken word artist Javon Johnson spoke from the heart on
what he witnessed form the youth and then shared one of his poems with the audience. As the
night ended, it was agreed that this was a magical, irreplaceable night for all who were there to
celebrate the words of our community.
