USC Civic and Community Relations and USC ReadersPlus sponsored their annual writing contest in February. A new theme was introduced in celebration of Presidents’ Day and the inauguration of President Barack Obama. What advice do our students have for the new president? Please help us be safe from guns and knives by taking them away while using police to help. Barack Obama, I hope you will keep us safe and help our schools. | Creo que usted es el presidente perfecto para los Estados Unidos de América. It is important to make the world a better place because it will be nice and good to let people live in a better place and a better world too. | Le escribo esta carta para pedirle que convierta el mundo en un sitio mejor. The reason why I am writing you this letter is to ask for your help. Many families are losing their jobs, and they don’t have money to pay for their homes. They are losing their cars because they can’t pay their bills. So please Mr. President, I ask if you could please help my country that seems to be falling apart. | La razón por la cual le escribo esta carta es para pedir su ayuda. I think you should deal with economy first because people are losing their homes and jobs. When I see people on the streets with signs saying they need shelter, food and care it makes me think how fortunate I am. I want you to take action by building more homes, sending people money and creating jobs.
I think you should deal with war second because war is a horrible thing. It is also horrible for children growing up being exposed to it. War is the improper way to settle the differences between people and countries. I want you to take action by speaking to people and helping them settle their differences in a polite way. | Primero, creo que deberíamos ocuparnos de la economía porque la gente está perdiendo sus casas y sus trabajos. Cuando veo a la gente en las calles con pancartas y carteles pidiendo un sitio donde dormir, comida y ayuda, pienso en lo afortunada que soy. Quiero que usted actúe y construya más casas, dé dinero a la gente y cree trabajos.
Creo que se debería ocupar de la guerra en segundo lugar porque es una cosa horrible. También es horrible cuando los niños crecen expuestos a la guerra. La guerra es una forma incorrecta de resolver las diferencias entre los pueblos y los países. Quiero que actúe y hable con la gente y les ayude a resolver sus diferencias de una forma educada.

I want to talk to you about gang graffiti. I live in a neighborhood where gangsters stalk the streets. I’ve seen them spray paint walls and write on stop signs. I feel that all the graffiti misrepresents the community where I live, and I would be so glad if gangs are stopped.
Another problem that concerns me is the environment. Stop cutting down trees! Trees help animals live peacefully in nature, and trees make air cleaner to breath. Make electric cars more affordable. Send ordinary people that want to help plant more trees. | Quiero hablar con usted sobre el graffiti de las pandillas. Vivo en un vecindario donde los pandilleros rondan por las calles. Yo les he visto pintar los muros y escribir sobre las señales de stop. Creo que el graffiti daña la imagen del vecindario donde vivo, y sería tan feliz si se acabara con las pandillas.
Otro problema que me preocupa es el medioambiente. ¡Dejen de cortar los árboles! Los árboles ayudan a los animales a vivir en paz con la naturaleza, y los árboles hacen que podamos respirar un aire más limpio. Haga posible que los automóviles eléctricos sean más baratos. Envíe a sembrar más árboles a la gente normal y corriente que quiera ayudar.
