Hawaii for Hawaiians. On the season finale of United Shades of America, I go back to Hawaii, a beautiful island where the locals are struggling w/ the effects of tourism, especially during the pandemic. In this episode, I meet w/ some locals to discuss the tensions between the natives & the mainlanders who believe that they have "discovered" this beautiful paradise. We talk about whether there are ways that people can be better tourists who respect the land & the people if we vacation there. SPOILER ALERT: There are no easy answers in this one. But the journey is more than worth it. There are some special guests in this episode, including a rare United Shades appearance of my wife, Melissa. She comes along for a segment or two. (Along w/ a couple other guests who look suspiciously like us.) I also learn to surf! So, if you want to see me fall off of a surfboard a few times, tune in. Don't forget to follow me on twitter where I will live tweet during the episode. And immediately after the episode airs, you can tune in to Instagram Live. I’ll be having conversations w/ some of the people involved in the episode. - W.K.B., e-mailed newsletter |
