For the USC and Exposition Park neighborhoods in Los Angeles
The Lucy Wheeler House in West Adams' Harvard Heights on the other hand is a work in progress. Largely finished, but still there's work. It's historic status will save owners property taxes but will also limit renovation choices. The 2,620-square-foot house was designed in 1905.
Lucy Murray Wheeler was one of the first public stenographers in L.A. according to John Steven McGroarty's "Los Angeles From the Mountains to the Sea." The book, published in 1921, states: "Most of the work of the City Hall was done in her office for a number of years, including the writing of the specifications for the Third and Broadway Tunnel."
David Raposa, the agent selling the house, is
restoring a dairy farmhous built in 1888 in Jefferson Park. Last month the West Adams Heritage Association awarded
Raposa its Martin Weil commemorative award to further preservation. Weil owned the Lucy Wheeler House until he died last year.
MacVean calls West Adams "a neighborhood near downtown that is loved fiercely by its defenders but that demands its
newcomers to be, if not pioneers, at least residents ready for some
scruffiness." There are hundreds of city landmarks are in the
district, which is adjacent to University Park and Jefferson Park.
