2009 USC Family of Schools Teacher of the Year Awards

In May 2009, the Bogart/USC Family of Schools awards honored educators who go above and beyond the call of duty at our local schools. Peer nominations are excerpted here. These are done in conjunction with the Education Consortium of Central Los Angeles (ECCLA).

Leonida Alcazar,
Fourth grade, St. Agnes Parish School

“It’s no secret that Ms. Alcazar is demanding and sets high expectations for each child. It’s been that way for 22 years. With the demands come understanding and the tools and skills to reach each new level of excellence. Nida focuses on a child’s strengths, not shortcomings. ‘Life is not fair and obstacles are ahead,’ she cautions, ‘but you’ll be ready to handle them.’ It is obvious Nida believes in her students and provides a classroom that is a secure environment, rich with activities, mutual respect and acceptance.”
—Kathleen Doherty, Development Director, St. Agnes Parish School

Susan Courtney,
Kindergarten–second grade, Norwood Street Elementary School

“Susan brought Reading is Fundamental to the school 10 years ago. She pairs up classes so that older students can share books with younger students. She also created a student-run bookstore so that our students can purchase quality literature at a very low price. Susan began an action research network 15 years ago and has pursued knowledge in the importance of play, uses literature to raise the quality of student conversation, and uses the eight steps of model drawing to increase student understanding of word problems.” | “Susan trajo el programa Reading is Fundamental a nuestra escuela hace diez años.
—Heidi Schaefer, Teacher, Norwood Street Elementary School

Jairo de la Torre,
Second grade, Alexander Science Center School

“In his first two years at the school, he and his team teaching partner made home-visits to every one of the 40 children in their two classes. This gave them insight into their students’ home lives, built a bond of trust and understanding with parents and gave the students a sense of how deeply their teachers cared about them. His classroom is a place of calm excitement. He has succeeded in integrating science into every topic, just as the founders of this school envisioned.”
—David Valentine, Technology Coordinator, Alexander Science Center School

Jane Fung,
Kindergarten, Alexander Science Center School

“Jane Fung is regarded by her colleagues as the among wisest and possibly the most respected teacher at the school. She serves on any committee when asked and was part of starting the PTA at our school. Jane is a wizard at finding resources and bringing them to the school. She produces a school newsletter to keep parents and teachers up to date on the rich opportunities available here to this school. She allows her students to explore and follow their interests to convey the necessary lessons on whatever topic is under consideration.”
—Anna M. Gaiter, Director of Professional Development, California Science Center

Veronica García,
Sixth grade ESL, Foshay Learning Center

“Ms. Garcia has dedicated herself to complete mastery in her field, English-language Learners. She holds an advanced degree in this specialty and has travelled extensively to work with English learners in other countries and in a variety of settings. She has deep compassion for the struggles of students and families trying to wrestle with lack of language proficiency on top of the usual, and sometimes extraordinary, challenges in their lives. Her students thrive under her leadership. She is also very involved in school governance on several levels.”
—Benin Williams, Librarian, Foshay Learning Center

Mark Gozonsky,
Fifth grade, Weemes Elementary School

“Mark tapped into his love (and knowledge) of music and created CDs to accompany each Open Court unit. And although he taught fifth grade this year, he made the fourth-graders a new CD for the Survival unit. He also created scavenger hunts to open each unit, video clips to enrich vocabulary study, and Reader’s Theatre scripts for fluency practice. After school finds Mr. Gozonsky very busy. He leads a Don Quijote Book Club and just finished a six-part Dreams from My Father Book Club at Morningside High School in Inglewood.”
—Lynn Akers, Teacher, Weemes Elementary School

Lee Isenberg (center), Theatre and Social Studies, 32nd Street/USC MAST K–12
“Lee has over 25 years teaching experience at the kindergarten through twelfth-grade levels. During her first year at 32nd Street she implemented a playwriting unit and before long the original scenes and monologues developed into plays, which the students performed at such venues as the 24th Street Theatre and USC Village Gate.”
