I hope you had a great 4th of July weekend! I heard more fireworks than I saw.

People are struggling around the country & we need a different type of leadership in Washington: independent thinkers who are looking out for people.

That’s why I’m excited to be endorsing two independent thinkers today: Dr. Al Gross running for Senate in Alaska and Liam O’Mara running for Congress in California’s 42nd district.

Dr. Al Gross is a commercial fisherman, an orthopedic surgeon & a lifelong Alaskan. He is running for Senate as an Independent. Al represents some of the best impulses in American politics. He’s fueled not by ideology but by what works for his community. Al’s father helped create Alaska’s oil dividend as state Attorney General. I’m excited to help send Al to Washington, where he will continue his father’s legacy as a leader in the fight to create a more human-centered economy.

Liam O’Mara grew up a working class kid in a union household. His father worked on the docks & his mom ran a daycare. The first in his family to go to college, Liam didn’t start college until he was 30, but he went on to get his PhD in history & become a professor. Liam sees the big picture and understands what real families are going through right now. For those who are fed up w/ the same old politicians, Liam is a great candidate to support. He won his competitive primary and now faces a 27-year Republican incumbent. I’d love to see Liam fighting for better policies on Capitol Hill.

I enjoy supporting our amazing Humanity Forward candidates and hope that you do too. Get behind Al and Liam and donate a few dollars today. We can make a huge difference for these candidates the same way we did for Jermaine Johnson, Jeremy Cooney & others. Let’s win races and get new leadership into Washington D.C. as fast as possible.

Always moving forward,

- Andrew

Celebrating a different way this Fourth of July

July 4th is the celebration of our nation’s independence - independence which was only provided to the white men of America. Racial inequality has plagued our country since the day we declared our independence from Britain. It is even baked into our nation’s constitution. To those who have lost faith that we can do better, the weight of centuries of evidence and experience is on your side. It is difficult to argue w/ experience.

Can we begin to right the inequities that have weighed down our country for generations? It is up to us. We have no choice but to try. We must try our hearts out, try until we burst, beyond the limits of our endurance.

As Martin Luther King Jr. put so eloquently, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” All of us can’t matter until Black Lives Matter

The All of Us campaign has created a helpful allyship guide w/ dozens of resources. Please consider checking it out. We have a responsibility to learn, grow & take action.

It’s on all of us.

It’s great to make a difference. That’s why I’m so passionate about supporting our Humanity Forward candidates. If we mobilize, as we did in South Carolina w/ Jermaine Johnson & this week in New York, we can push our movement forward in monumental ways.

Today, I’m excited to be endorsing two superb candidates for congress: Donna Imam for Texas’s 31st district & Marilyn Strickland for Washington’s 10th district!

Endorsement graphic of Donna Imam, running for Congress in Texas’ 31st District, and Marilyn Strickland, running for Congress in Washington’s 10th District.

Donna Imam is one of the most solutions-oriented candidates I’ve ever spoken to, which is no surprise as she’s an engineer & entrepreneur. Years ago, Donna saw hundreds of her colleagues laid off due to automation. She led a non-profit to help equip people for the transition. Today, she’s fighting to make sure we have an economy that works for everyone. I met Donna early in 2019 at a campaign event in Austin. She spoke w/ the same eloquence & understanding then as she does now. Her primary runoff is just a couple weeks away. If she wins, she’ll be facing a 17-year conservative incumbent. Let’s fight for her so she can fight for us.

Marilyn Strickland was born in Seoul, South Korea to a military family before coming to the U.S. in the 1960s. She was the popular two-term Mayor of Tacoma who ran on education & jobs & delivered. If elected to Congress, she will be the 1st African-American to represent Washington state at the federal level & its 1st Korean-American woman. Marilyn is the kind of person you want as mayor - a bridge-builder who gets things done. That’s the sort of leadership we need in Congress.

I’m excited about Donna & Marilyn! They’re the real deal. Please join me in supporting their campaigns - & let’s help get them to Washington D.C. where they can help turn our country around.

To moving humanity forward,

- Andrew

Your Data Should Belong to You - & not to the Big Tech Companies -

During my campaign, I argued that our data should be ours. That sounds obvious, but today, big tech companies & data brokers are selling and re-selling our data every day & we are none the wiser.

This is a very big deal. Facebook today is a $650 billion company built largely upon the monetization of our data. How much of that value are we seeing? We have increasingly become commodified & packaged for those who want to occupy our attention.

They are not just profiting from these practices. They are also influencing our actions & attitudes by feeding us information that maximizes our engagement above all else. We are being pushed in specific directions to the detriment of our democracy, mental health, and free will. Instead of having things sold to us, we ourselves have become the product, and we are being sold to those w/ the means to buy access to every detail about our behavior - & to shape what we do next.

The question is, what do we do about it?

I am thrilled to say that there is a new law on the books that will enable us to fight for our data property rights. California’s Consumer Privacy Act - the CCPA - became effective on January 1. It stipulates that every Californian has the right to know what personal information is being collected, the right to access that data, the right to know who it's being sold to & the right to opt out of those sales. Tech companies are currently lobbying California regulators to water down how these rights will be enforced - but they will be enforced starting on July 1. Nevada has already passed a similar law & multiple other states are looking to do the same.

To drive this effort, Humanity Forward has partnered w/ a new organization - the Data Dividend Project - to help fight for YOUR data rights. We know that the average citizen is completely outgunned & in the dark about how to take back control of your data. The tech companies have billions of dollars & hundreds of lawyers. What does the average citizen have? The Data Dividend Project aims to gather together hundreds of thousands of Americans to collectively bargain to take back your data rights that are currently being exploited by the big technology companies & data brokers. They won’t listen to anything but a unified voice.

It's called the Data Dividend Project because the goal is to change the status quo so that, if you choose to share your data, YOU can get paid for the use of your data. After all, if anyone is making money off of your data, shouldn’t it be you? This is another way we can get money into people’s hands now instead of waiting for Congress to get its act together.

If this sounds good to you, go to ddpforall.com to help power this consumer revolution & tell your friends to do the same. It's very quick & easy. And after they get their dividend too, they’ll thank you and owe you dinner.

I hope you’re as excited about the Data Dividend Project as I am. Let’s fight for humanity & give us control back of our own future, our own data & our own property. It's ours already - we just need to take it back.

- Andrew
